2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY, 20th district)

Kirsten Gillibrand is the current Democratic congressional representative for New York's 20th district. She is an experienced attorney, tireless civic leader, and the first woman to represent the 20th district after beating incumbent Republican John Sweeney in November of 2006. Because of her independent leadership and commitment to women's health and family issues, NOW is proud to endorse Gillibrand in the 2008 election.

During her time in Congress, Gillibrand has taken a strong leadership role on legislation that would benefit hard-working families in Upstate and North Country and has demanded responsible federal spending. She has been a leader in reforming education, improving healthcare access, and developing the local economy. She has written legislation that would double the tax credit for child care expenses and make up to $10,000 in college tuition tax deductible.

Gillibrand also takes our nation's security seriously and was a lead sponsor of legislation that would start a bipartisan 9/11 Commission Recommendations. She is a persistent advocate for the women and men serving our country in the military. Her active leadership has already made a mark on Congress, from her first days as an elected official. During her first 100 hours, she cosponsored the CLEAN Energy Act of 2007, and joined 263 of her colleagues on both sides of the political aisle to vote in support of investment in renewable energy. Gillibrand has proved herself an asset to the Democratic party, and her strong voice is essential to the movement for change.

Before running for Congress, Gillibrand served during the Clinton administration as Special Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and worked hard for the revitalization of lower income areas. During her time as a partner at the law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner, she was a champion for women and families through her pro-bono work. She served abused women and children and defended her tenants' right to affordable, lead-free housing.
