2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH, Senate)
Jeanne Shaheen, the Democratic candidate for Senate in New Hampshire, is a three-time governor of New Hampshire and a strong proponent of progressive views. This is her second bid for the Senate. In 2002, Shaheen was narrowly defeated by Republican John E. Sununu, and this year, Shaheen's candidacy is regarded as one of the best opportunities for strengthening the Democratic Senate majority. The race promises to be one of the most volatile and well-funded contests this election season. Because of Shaheen's decision to run, the Washington Post has dubbed Sununu "the single most endangered Republican incumbent in the country."
For the duration of her career, Governor Shaheen has been an outspoken and tireless advocate for reproductive rights and family planning. As governor, one of Shaheen's earliest acts was to repeal the 150-year-old law which made abortion a felony. Shaheen has and will continue to take a proactive stance supporting federal funding of reproductive health care, including family planning and comprehensive sex education. Additionally, Governor Shaheen will vote to confirm justices to the Supreme Court who will uphold our constitutional right to privacy.
Jeanne Shaheen is the only woman to be elected Governor of New Hampshire, and, if elected, will be the first female senator from the Granite State. In the Senate, Shaheen will continue to work on progressive energy policies. She has resolved to expand access to health care, strengthen the state's economy, improve education, promote government accountability, preserve the environment, and protect civil rights.
