2008 Elections : NOW PACs Profile
Niki Tsongas (D-Mass., 5th District)
NOW has endorsed candidate Niki Tsongas in her race for the Congressional seat in the 5th District of Massachusetts. An impassioned community leader with a military background, Tsongas first became engaged in politics in 1968 with her work for presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy and against the Vietnam War. Tsongas is a dedicated public servant and activist with a long history of work in politics. Her husband, Paul Tsongas, was a senator before his death, and she has remained inspired by his memory and their shared political passions.
Tsongas is deeply dismayed by the Bush administration's arrogance, and has pledged, if elected to Congress, to confront critical issues. She is determined to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare and to invest in education. She has also resolved to withdraw troops from Iraq and to put resources into the stabilization of the region.
Tsongas has learned much from her work as the head of a foundation to provide education funding for the children of the victims of September 11th. Her service on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards has strengthened her belief that business must be "constructively engaged in the fight of social and environmental justice." She served on the Lowell Civil Stadium and Arena Commission and continues to work toward the revitalization of her community.
If elected to Congress, Tsongas plans to rectify the failures of the Bush administration, which include the Iraq War, inadequate veteran care, lack of action concerning global warming, irresponsibility in public safety, and the No Child Left Behind Act. Tsongas supports reproductive rights and has pledged to further the status of women during her tenure in Congress.
